Citi - Morale is at an all-time low, is it just my department?

I’ve been at Citi for a while now and I’ve seen some cycles, but this current atmosphere is different. It’s not just the usual end-of-quarter pressure; it’s the sense that the leadership team is preparing for something big and negative. My skip-level mentioned that we need to 'prepare for a leaner operational model' twice in our last town hall. We all know what that actually means. Projects are being delayed indefinitely, and the hiring freeze seems to be affecting backfills, not just new roles. People are visibly checking out and spending more time on LinkedIn than on their actual deliverables. I’m honestly just exhausted by the anxiety of it all. Has anyone else noticed their department shrinking through attrition, or are they actually cutting people outright in other divisions? It feels like we are waiting for the other shoe to drop, and I’m tired of looking over my shoulder every time a calendar invite pops up from HR.

It is definitely not just your department. I have been hearing the same buzzwords about 'operational efficiency' and 'leaner models' across several different lines of business. The mood in my office is identical; everyone is on edge, and the constant talk of restructuring without any clear roadmap is killing productivity. Projects feel like they are in limbo, and nobody wants to take ownership because they are worried the team won't exist in six months. It is exhausting to watch the uncertainty drag on like this.

Honestly, take a breath. Citi is a massive ship and these 'transformation' phases happen every few years. While the messaging feels grim, remember that these leadership town halls are often just scripted corporate noise designed to keep shareholders calm. If you are doing your job well and keeping your head down, you are likely safer than the rumor mill suggests. Focus on your own output and try to tune out the panic. It usually blows over once the new fiscal year starts and priorities shift again.
