Project pipeline looks anemic, anyone else seeing this?

Hey everyone, been at Citi for a few years now in [division, e.g., Tech/Ops]. Lately, it feels like the well of new projects has completely dried up. Usually, we'd have a decent pipeline of new initiatives starting each quarter, or at least some 'maybes' on the horizon. But for the past couple of months, it's been crickets. Even the smaller optimization efforts seem to be on hold. My manager is vague when asked, just says 'focus on existing book of work'. Feels like there's either a massive strategic shift happening behind the scenes, or budgets are just locked down tight. Is anyone else in a similar boat where new development work is just... gone? Makes it hard to feel motivated when you're just maintaining the status quo.

Yeah, I'm seeing the same thing in [another division, e.g., Risk Management]. There's a definite slowdown. It's not just about new projects; even existing ones are facing increased scrutiny and budget freezes. Feels like the firm is in a holding pattern, possibly waiting for market conditions to improve or for a new strategic direction. The lack of transparency is frustrating, makes it hard to plan or even stay motivated when you don't know what's coming.

Definitely. The 'existing book of work' mantra is getting old. Seems like a lot of the innovation budget has been reallocated or frozen altogether. Maybe it's a sign of a broader economic shift impacting the financial sector, or perhaps internal restructuring is underway. Either way, the lack of visible future work is concerning for career progression and overall morale. Hopefully, this is a temporary phase.
