1100 laid off, but engineering grew? I'm not buying the efficiency story.

Just saw the news about the 1100 layoffs at Cloudflare. It's brutal, especially seeing the date. But what's really grinding my gears is the narrative coming out – something about "efficiency" and how certain roles are becoming "obsolete" due to advancements. And then you hear that engineering headcount actually *increased*? Seriously? If things are so efficient that you can get rid of over a thousand people, why are you hiring more engineers? It feels like a convenient excuse to cut costs and potentially reallocate resources, maybe to higher-paid roles or different projects, while simultaneously painting it as a positive step forward. This whole 'progress' angle feels like a slap in the face to everyone who was just let go. Anyone else feel like this justification is incredibly thin and doesn't hold water?
