1,100 people gone, but they are still hiring for other roles?

Is anyone else feeling completely gaslit by the latest announcement? We just saw 1,100 people get the axe, yet the internal job board seems to have more open headcount today than it did last week. Management is out here preaching about 'obsolete skill sets' and shifting the focus to high-leverage engineering roles, but it feels like a total bait-and-switch. I’ve talked to two friends in product who were let go, and they were the most productive people on their squads. Now, they're being told the business is 're-optimizing' while leadership simultaneously pushes for a 45% growth in engineering headcount. How does that math even work? If we were bloated, why keep backfilling? It feels like they just wanted to purge higher salaries and replace them with junior talent who don't know the legacy codebase. The culture feels incredibly toxic right now. If you’re still inside, keep your head down and your LinkedIn status set to active. This place isn't the same company it was two years ago.

It is the classic corporate shell game. They purge the middle to clear the books, then immediately open requisitions for 'cheaper' or 'specialized' talent to satisfy investors and boost the stock price. It is never about obsolete skills; it is about manipulating the head count to shift the narrative. Don't look for logic in their hiring board, look for the optics they are trying to sell to the market while the actual morale inside the building craters.

I am sorry you are going through this. It is incredibly demoralizing to watch high performers get pushed out while the company simultaneously pushes a narrative of 'strategic growth' through new hires. It feels like a calculated move to reset salary bands and clear out tenured staff under the guise of an organizational shift. The cognitive dissonance of being told you are pivoting while your former teammates are left out in the cold is exactly what burns out the remaining staff.
