Is anyone else struggling with the 'performance' narrative?

It feels like every week there’s a new talking point coming from the top about how we need to become a leaner, more 'agile' organization. After this latest round of 1,100 layoffs, the internal messaging about maintaining high standards for the remaining staff is starting to feel insulting. They talk about productivity gains, but the reality on the ground is that those of us left behind are now doing the work of three people. My team is completely gutted. We lost our lead and a senior dev, and now I’m expected to pick up their legacy codebases without any extra resources or guidance. Is this just the new normal for tech? I’m exhausted, and the 'do more with less' mantra is really taking a toll on my mental health. I liked it here once, but it feels like the human element has been completely stripped out of the business model.

It’s the classic corporate playbook. They frame these cuts as 'streamlining' or 'focusing on performance,' but it’s really just stripping the skeleton bare to keep the stock price propped up. When you lose the people who actually know how the legacy systems work, efficiency doesn't go up—it craters. You’re left playing hero to keep the lights on, only to get another email about 'operational excellence' next quarter. Take care of your mental health, because leadership clearly isn't going to do it for you.

I’ve been watching this happen from the outside, and the disconnect between the PR machine and the reality of the engineering culture is getting wider by the day. They’re chasing that 'lean startup' aesthetic while managing a massive infrastructure, which is a recipe for burnout. It’s hard to maintain high standards when the institutional knowledge walks out the door in batches. Don't let them gaslight you into thinking your exhaustion is a personal performance issue; it’s a failure of management strategy.
