700 cuts today: Did anyone actually get a warning?

Woke up to the dreaded calendar invite on my personal phone. 700 of us gone just like that. I’ve been here for three years and I genuinely thought we were past the 'lean' phase after the last few rounds. The messaging in the all-hands was so hollow—talking about 'operational efficiency' while they keep dumping money into speculative R&D projects that haven't shipped a single meaningful feature in months. I’m curious if anyone in engineering got more than the boilerplate 'your access is revoked' email. I have projects mid-migration and zero transition time. It feels like they just threw darts at a board to hit a headcount target for the street before the next earnings call. If you’re still inside, watch your back. If the burn rate is still what the rumors suggest, this 14% isn’t the end of it. Good luck to everyone currently refreshing their LinkedIn; it’s going to be a long summer.

I am so sorry to hear you got hit. I was in a previous round last year and it’s a total gut punch to see the cycle continue. The disconnect between leadership’s 'efficiency' rhetoric and the actual reality of those R&D money pits is infuriating. For what it’s worth, engineering didn't get any special treatment in my experience; it was just an immediate lockout and a PDF sent to a personal email. Take some time for yourself, clear your head, and don't look back at that place. You’ll find something much more stable.

It is honestly surreal to read this. I am still inside and the mood today is absolutely soul-crushing. People are just sitting in silence at their desks because no one knows who is next or if the lists are finalized. The messaging from the top has been absolute corporate garbage for months, and seeing long-term contributors get wiped out like this confirms that nobody is safe. I'm sorry you’re dealing with the fallout of their poor resource allocation. Don't let the 'operational efficiency' line gaslight you; this is entirely on management's failure to pivot effectively.
