Is the culture shifting or am I just burning out?

I’ve been at ConocoPhillips for a few years now, and I used to feel like this was a place where you could actually plant roots. Lately, the vibe has completely shifted. With the latest news about the layoffs in MA, the hallway talk has gone from 'how are we going to hit our production targets' to 'who is next on the chopping block.' The constant pressure to do more with less resources is starting to take a real toll on my mental health. I’m seeing some of our best engineers polishing their resumes, which is never a good sign for the health of our teams. Is leadership actually planning for the long term, or are we just trimming the fat to keep the stock price propped up for the next earnings call? Just needed to vent because morale in my department is effectively zero right now.

It is definitely not just you. The atmosphere has soured significantly over the past year. There was a time when the company felt like a stable career home, but now it feels like a high-stress revolving door. The management seems more focused on the bottom line than the actual people keeping the wells running. I have watched three of my closest colleagues leave in the last six months alone, and honestly, I am polishing my own resume too. It is exhausting to constantly feel like you are walking on eggshells waiting for the next announcement.

Look, it is an oil company, not a charity. Cycles are part of the business, and if you have been here for a few years, you should know that the landscape changes with the market. Is it stressful? Sure. But that is the nature of the industry. If the pressure is getting to you, it might just be time to accept that this role is no longer a fit. Plenty of people are still grinding and hitting their targets. Maybe step back, re-evaluate your goals, and decide if you want to stay or find a company with a slower pace.
