It is the classic corporate double standard. They expect us to pinch pennies on office supplies and travel while they jet off to these 'strategy retreats' that never seem to produce anything tangible for the teams on the ground. When leadership talks about alignment while simultaneously freezing hiring and holding back on headcount transparency, it usually means the bean counters are preparing for a round of restructuring. Trust your gut—if they are being intentionally vague about Q4, they are likely trying to keep morale from cratering until the decisions are already finalized and it is too late to pivot.
I have been through enough of these cycles at Constellation to recognize the pattern. That 'strategic alignment' language is just executive shorthand for 'we need to cut costs to hit the margin targets for shareholders, but we don't want to tell you yet.' The dissonance is real, but it is unfortunately business as usual. They justify the retreats as necessary for high-level planning, but for everyone else, it is just another signal that the budget belt-tightening isn't going to loosen up anytime soon. Keep your resume updated and focus on your core deliverables until the Q4 plan actually drops.
