Is the 'Costco culture' finally breaking down?

I’ve been with the company for a few years now, and the shift in tone is palpable. It feels like the focus has moved entirely away from taking care of the employees and shifted toward keeping the shareholders happy at all costs. The 'productivity metrics' talk is just the start—now there’s constant chatter about 'operational efficiency' whenever we mention workload or burnout. I’m honestly terrified that if the economy dips even slightly, we’re all going to be on the chopping block despite the 'company family' marketing. Has anyone else noticed how thin the floor crews are getting? It feels like we are doing the work of two people for the same pay, and I’m starting to wonder if they’re just waiting for us to quit so they don’t have to do a formal reduction in force.

I’ve been seeing the same thing at my location. It used to feel like management actually had our backs, but lately, it’s all about the numbers and hitting those impossible hourly goals. The constant push for 'efficiency' is just code for cutting labor and squeezing more work out of the people left on the floor. It’s a shame to see such a once-great company turn into just another corporate machine that views staff as liabilities rather than assets. I'm definitely keeping my resume updated just in case things take a turn for the worse.

Honestly, people have been saying the 'Costco magic' is dying for decades. I remember hearing the exact same complaints back when I started five years ago. It’s still one of the best retail jobs you can find when you look at the industry standards as a whole. You’re still getting better pay and benefits than anywhere else nearby. It might feel more corporate now, but let’s be real, it’s still a massive operation that needs to stay profitable to survive. Maybe try focusing on your own tasks and ignoring the corporate jargon.
