Anyone else seeing the hiring freeze and budget lockdowns?

Is it just my division, or is HR stalling on every single backfill request right now? I’ve been trying to get approval for a headcount replacement for three weeks, and the feedback from finance is just 'hold until further notice.' It feels like they’re tightening the belt way more than the usual quarterly routine. A few guys in engineering mentioned that travel budgets are getting slashed to zero for the rest of the year, which is usually a massive red flag. I’ve been at CRH for a few years, and usually, the communication is a bit more transparent, but this feels like they’re prepping the books for something. Has anyone heard any whispers from the regional directors about Q4 expectations or restructuring targets? Trying to gauge if I should polish the resume now or if I’m just being paranoid.

I’m seeing the exact same thing in my department. It’s definitely not just you. We had two open roles that were essentially greenlit, and suddenly finance pulled the plug with that exact same 'hold until further notice' phrasing. The travel freeze is the real kicker, though. When they start cutting into project-related site visits, it usually means the margins are tighter than management is willing to admit in the all-hands meetings. I’d advise keeping your resume updated just in case.

Honestly, this is pretty standard for this time of year, though I know it feels different right now. Every time we approach the end of the fiscal year, they lock down headcount and slash discretionary spending to make the balance sheet look pristine for the stakeholders. Don't panic yet; it happens almost every cycle. They are just trying to hit their year-end targets. If you look at the historical data for the last three years, we see this exact pattern of budget lockdowns every single autumn.
