The 'growth' narrative is getting harder to believe

Every town hall meeting we have is just a slide deck full of buzzwords about how DG is 'positioning for future success' while they’re gutting the headcount in the Southern region. It’s impossible to ignore the cognitive dissonance anymore. How are we supposed to maintain these store standards and support the field teams when the back-office support is being skeletonized? I look at the people being let go, and it’s not just the bottom performers; it’s people who have been here for years, carrying the institutional knowledge that keeps this place from completely falling apart. It’s demoralizing. I had a coworker break down at their desk yesterday after the news came down. At this point, I’m just waiting for my turn or for the workload to become so unmanageable that I have to quit anyway. Does leadership actually have a plan beyond just cutting costs until there’s nothing left to cut? It really feels like they’re just trying to boost the stock price for a short-term pump, regardless of what happens to the people actually doing the work.

The corporate disconnect is real. They keep pushing these 'operational excellence' initiatives while simultaneously slashing the only people who know how to actually run a store. You can’t build a future on a foundation you’re actively destroying. It’s the classic short-term wall street play: cut expenses to make the quarterly report look pretty, and let the long-term health of the company rot from the inside out. Anyone who has been here for more than a few years can see the ship taking on water while management talks about the view from the deck.

Honestly, it feels like they’re just trying to milk the remaining value out of the brand before everything collapses. The headcount reductions are just the symptom of a larger rot. You can’t expect a skeleton crew to manage freight, inventory, and customer service while corporate pushes down more useless tasks. Every time a veteran staff member is pushed out, the store quality takes a massive hit, and it’s just going to drive the remaining customers to other retailers. It’s not just a bad business strategy; it’s a complete abandonment of their core purpose.
