Is the hiring freeze permanent for the rest of the year?

Just noticed that several open reqs in our department were quietly pulled down yesterday without any explanation. When I asked HR about the status of a specific backfill, they gave the standard 're-evaluating business priorities' response. We haven't had a formal town hall addressing headcount since the spring, and the lack of transparency is killing morale. It feels like we are bracing for an impact that hasn't been announced yet. If they’re pulling open roles, it’s usually a precursor to a wider restructuring. Anyone hear anything about potential cuts in the industrial segments? I’d rather know now than wait for the inevitable calendar invite at 8:00 AM on a Friday.

I'm seeing the exact same thing in my department. They pulled three roles that were already in the final interview stages without a word to the hiring managers. The 're-evaluating priorities' script is HR's go-to line when they don't want to admit we're likely looking at a headcount reduction. At this point, I think we all know what's coming. Start updating your portfolios and reaching out to your network now—it’s better to be prepared for a layoff than to be caught off guard when they finally decide to stop being vague.

Honestly, the lack of communication is the most frustrating part of the whole situation. It feels like leadership thinks we aren't paying attention, but pulling reqs in the middle of a quarter is a neon sign that the budget has been gutted. I’ve stopped asking my manager for updates because they clearly don't know anything either. Just keep your head down, do the bare minimum, and keep an eye on the internal job board. If these roles are vanishing, it’s a clear sign that the hiring freeze isn't going anywhere for a long time.
