Anyone else notice the sudden 'hiring freeze' on backfills?

I’ve been tracking our internal job board for the past three weeks. Normally, when someone puts in their two weeks, the requisition for their replacement goes live within 48 hours. Lately? Nothing. I’ve seen three senior roles in my department go dark after the employees left, and management is just pivoting to 'realigning priorities.' When I asked my manager about the lack of backfill during our 1:1, they got visibly uncomfortable and started giving me the standard boilerplate about 'optimizing resources for the upcoming quarter.' It feels like they are letting attrition handle the headcount reduction so they don’t have to deal with the severance optics or a formal WARN notice. If you’re waiting for a posting to open up for your team, don't hold your breath. The quiet churn is definitely underway.

Same thing is happening in my division. Three vacancies in my team have been open for over a month, and leadership is now pushing for 'cross-functional collaboration' to cover the work. It’s clearly a soft layoff strategy disguised as operational efficiency. They aren't announcing anything formally, but the writing is on the wall. Don't expect those roles to open back up anytime soon; they are just waiting for the current headcount numbers to drop naturally so they don't have to trigger severance packages.

I wouldn't hold my breath for those backfills. I’ve survived three of these 'realignments' over the last decade, and it always follows this exact script. They pull the requisitions, claim they are reassessing the department needs, and then quietly absorb the workload into the remaining staff. My advice is to keep your resume updated and stop volunteering for extra projects to prove you can handle the load. If you make it look easy to do the work of two people, they have zero incentive to ever hire your replacement.
