The shift toward automation is definitely a sign that they are prepping for a major workforce reduction. Every time leadership starts throwing around buzzwords like 'operational efficiency' and 'legacy assets,' it is code for cutting headcount to make the balance sheet look better for shareholders. I have seen this cycle too many times at Dow; they squeeze the departments for every bit of productivity while cutting the actual tools we need to function. If your budget is already frozen, take it as a warning that the axe is coming for the overhead costs next.
I honestly think people are reading way too much into the town hall. 'Streamlining legacy assets' is just standard corporate speak that we have heard at every annual meeting for the last decade. It sounds like they are just trying to modernize the plants to keep us competitive, which is necessary if we want to stay relevant. Sure, the budget freezes are annoying, but it is just a tight fiscal year across the whole sector. Don't panic until you see an actual shift in the hiring policy or regional restructuring announcements.
