20% cut today, but feels like we're still just treading water

It’s hard to wrap my head around what happened this morning. 20% of the workforce gone in a blink. I survived this round, but the office feels like a graveyard—or it would, if any of us were actually in it. Everyone is just staring at their Slack status, waiting for the inevitable follow-up meeting or the 're-org' announcement. I’ve been here long enough to see the culture erode, but this feels different. The leadership talk about 'pivoting to AI' and 'operational efficiency,' but it just feels like we’re hollowing out the core product to chase a narrative that Wall Street wants to hear. If you’re one of the ones who were let go today, I’m truly sorry. The severance might be decent on paper, but the current market is absolutely brutal. I’ve been browsing LinkedIn for the first time in years and the sheer volume of high-level talent posting #OpenToWork is terrifying. Is this it? Is the company just going to manage decline until it’s a skeleton crew? I’m exhausted by the 'new chapter' messaging. It’s hard to be productive when you know your neighbor’s seat is empty because the math didn't add up.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It’s brutal to watch your team vanish while the leadership hides behind corporate jargon. When efficiency becomes the only goal, the people actually doing the work are always the ones who pay the price. Take a breath, update your resume, and try to disconnect for a bit. You aren’t just a headcount, and you don’t owe them your mental health while the ship is sinking.

That feeling of walking through a virtual graveyard is all too familiar. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s the lack of transparency and the hollow promises about the company’s direction. Once the trust is broken, it rarely comes back, no matter how many internal town halls they schedule. Don’t wait for another round of cuts to start looking for a better environment. Your skills are valuable, and plenty of places actually respect their talent.
