Feeling the pressure—anyone else getting 're-prioritization' emails?

I just got tagged in a 're-prioritization' email chain that effectively nukes the project I’ve been grinding on for the last six months. It wasn't framed as a cancellation, just a 'shift in strategic focus to align with leaner operations.' We’ve all seen the news cycles about other tech firms trimming 15-20% of their staff, and it’s impossible not to connect the dots when your specific team suddenly stops getting requests from upper management. My manager is being extremely vague when I ask about the long-term impact on our headcount. The constant talk about 'efficiency' and 'streamlining' is starting to sound like a precursor to an inevitable email from HR on a Friday morning. If we are actually heading toward a reduction in force, I wish they’d just rip the bandage off instead of keeping us in this purgatory where we’re working on ghost projects that are never going to see the light of day.

That is the classic corporate doublespeak for a layoff. When they stop talking about projects and start using terms like 'strategic alignment' and 'leaner operations,' it usually means the writing is on the wall. I went through the exact same thing last year; they treat these projects as disposable assets until the very end. Start polishing your resume and saving any personal files or portfolio work you need immediately, because once the freeze hits, you lose access to everything overnight. Don't wait for your manager to be honest, because they likely have no power to protect you anyway.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this, but you need to prioritize yourself right now. The vagueness from management is a tell; they are likely under strict instructions to keep things quiet until the final numbers are locked in. Don't burn yourself out trying to save a project that has already been marked for the chopping block. Use your remaining time to network with people outside your department and document your accomplishments for your next role. It is a tough industry climate, but you aren't the only one seeing the signs.
