The latest internal memo about 'optimizing our workforce footprint' is corporate speak for 'get ready for the axe,' isn't it? I’ve been with Duke for over six years now, and the tone of these communications has shifted significantly in the last quarter. It feels like they are priming us for bad news by using all this fluffy, vague language about 'aligning with long-term goals.' I’m honestly just tired of the anxiety. I’ve started updating my resume tonight because I’d rather be prepared than blindsided like so many people were in the industry last year. It’s a shame, I actually liked the work here, but the constant looming threat of a restructuring event makes it impossible to focus on actual projects. If anyone has intel on specific departments being targeted, please share. I’m just trying to figure out if I should be applying to the competition now or waiting it out.

They’ve been pulling this 'synergy' routine for years whenever the stock price needs a boost or they want to trim the fat before a big project announcement. It’s always the same vague, sanitized language meant to keep us guessing while they crunch the numbers behind closed doors. You’re definitely not paranoid for feeling this way—trust your gut and get those applications out. It’s always better to leave on your own terms than to wait for a calendar invite titled 'Important Business Update' that ends your career in ten minutes.

I hear you on the anxiety, but try not to let it consume you while you’re still clocking in. Duke is a massive, bureaucratic machine that operates in cycles of 'optimization' that usually amount to middle-management shuffling and minor headcount reductions. That being said, updating your resume is just good career hygiene regardless of what the memo says. Take control of your own narrative so you don't feel like a victim of their corporate speak. If the environment has shifted this much, you're doing exactly the right thing by looking at your options.
