Anyone else noticing the hiring freeze creeping in?

I’ve been watching the internal portals for a few weeks now and it feels like the number of open reqs in our division has been slashed by half. Usually, we’re backfilling roles within a few weeks, but lately, I’m seeing positions sit empty for months or just disappearing entirely. My manager has been super cagey during our 1:1s whenever I ask about the Q4 budget, just giving the standard 'we’re being prudent with resources' line. It feels like they’re trying to achieve a headcount reduction through attrition rather than doing a formal RIF announcement. Is anyone else hearing whispers about a formal plan, or are we just watching the slow drip of a silent downsizing? It’s getting hard to stay motivated when half the team is doing the work of two people because the vacancy was 'indefinitely paused'.

Same thing here in my department. It’s definitely not just your division. The 'prudent with resources' line is the classic corporate code for a soft freeze. I’ve noticed the same pattern where reqs just vanish into thin air without ever being filled. It’s frustrating because the workload hasn't decreased at all, but we’re expected to pick up the slack without any extra headcount. Everyone is bracing for an announcement soon, but leadership is playing it very close to the vest to avoid a mass exodus before the quarter closes.

Honestly, look at the recent earnings reports and the broader industry trends. Ecolab is always hyper-focused on margin expansion, and right now, the easiest way to juice those numbers is by letting attrition take its course rather than doing formal layoffs. If you notice roles sitting empty for months, it’s intentional. They are testing to see how long a team can function with fewer people. If we keep hitting our targets while understaffed, they’ll never bother bringing those positions back. Keep your resume polished and stay ready, because this strategy usually leads to a much leaner operating model.
