Feeling the squeeze on performance reviews this year

Just went through my mid-year review and the goalposts have moved significantly. My manager admitted that the 'budget constraints' mean that even if we hit our KPIs, the reward pool is effectively nonexistent. It feels like they are intentionally making the criteria impossible to meet so they can justify withholding bonuses or trimming the headcount under the guise of 'underperformance.' I’ve been with Ecolab for five years and this is the most demoralizing environment I’ve worked in. It really feels like they are trying to push people out voluntarily to avoid paying severance. Anyone else seeing this trend in their divisions, or is it just my leadership team looking for an exit strategy?

It’s honestly refreshing to hear I’m not the only one dealing with this. I've been seeing the exact same pattern in my department. They keep pushing the metrics higher while simultaneously tightening the purse strings. It feels like a calculated move to push out senior staff who are actually getting paid what they are worth. Don’t internalize it; it has nothing to do with your performance and everything to do with their bottom-line gymnastics. Keep your head down and start quietly updating your resume while you still have the title.
