Travel expenses getting micro-managed to death

Is it just my department, or is corporate tightening the screws on travel and T&E significantly more than last quarter? I had a standard trip for a client site visit denied last week, even though I've been doing this run for three years without an issue. The explanation was 'non-essential travel restrictions,' which sounds like code for needing to save every penny to prop up the margins before the fiscal year ends. I’m starting to get worried that if they’re squeezing this hard on travel, the next step is going to be a wider move on personnel. If you look at the last few all-hands, the focus on 'operational efficiency' is way higher than it used to be. Has anyone else had travel requests flat-out rejected recently? Thinking about updating my resume just in case the ship starts taking on more water.

It is definitely not just your department. I have seen the same shift across multiple divisions lately. They have implemented a new approval layer that makes even routine site visits feel like pulling teeth. It is incredibly frustrating because it ignores the reality of our day-to-day operations and client expectations. It feels like they are prioritizing short-term financial optics over our actual ability to do the job effectively. Hang in there, but definitely document every denial in case this impacts your performance reviews later.

Honestly, the travel freeze is just the tip of the iceberg. Management is obsessed with hitting these margin targets right now, and T&E is always the easiest target for them to slash when numbers are tight. I had a similar experience last month where a trip that was essential for a project rollout got shot down immediately. It is exhausting working under this kind of scrutiny, especially when you have been doing these trips for years without any pushback. Just keep pushing back with the business case, but prepare for them to keep the screws tightened until at least the next quarter.
