Ann Arbor office cleanup: who is left after the cuts?

It’s been a rough week in Ann Arbor. Seeing 282 people get the boot is a gut punch, especially when leadership was talking about 'growth' and 'innovation' just last quarter. I’ve been trying to gauge the mood on the floor, but it’s mostly just people avoiding eye contact and packing up boxes. The silence is deafening. Has anyone heard if they are planning any more rounds? I’m hearing rumors that the site footprint is going to be significantly reduced, and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth sticking around to see who they promote into the vacant roles, or if this is the beginning of a total exit from this location. My manager is acting like everything is business as usual, which is honestly the most insulting part. We’re all just numbers on a spreadsheet to them. If you’re still there, stay safe and keep your resume updated.

The leadership rhetoric about 'innovation' is just corporate noise to mask the real agenda. If you are still there, update your resume immediately because this is clearly the start of a trend, not an isolated incident. I was part of a similar restructure years ago, and they almost always come back for a second round once the initial shock wears off. Don't wait for a formal announcement to plan your exit; the footprint reduction is a massive red flag that your department might be next on the chopping block.

I am so sorry you are going through this. The uncertainty is arguably worse than the actual layoff itself. I have some friends who survived the cuts, and they mentioned that the morale is completely cratered and nobody knows who is staying or going. Please prioritize your own mental health right now and try not to spiral over the office rumors. If you have the bandwidth, start networking outside of the company while you still have access to your internal resources. You owe this place absolutely nothing.
