Internal mobility hit a brick wall

I’ve been trying to transfer internally for three months now. I’ve had great feedback, passed the initial screenings, and then—poof. Everything goes silent. I finally got a straight answer from a recruiter friend in another department who told me there is a silent hiring freeze on all lateral moves across the board. If they aren't letting us move internally, it’s almost certainly to make the math for a reduction in force cleaner on the books. It’s incredibly frustrating because I’m trying to grow my career here, but the writing seems to be on the wall. If you’re currently waiting on an internal offer, I’d suggest looking externally instead. I’ve stopped waiting for them to get back to me and have started reaching out to recruiters at competitors. Better to be prepared than to be the one surprised when the inevitable announcement email hits the inbox.

That sounds about right for the current climate. When they start freezing internal movement, it’s rarely a sign of a healthy pipeline. They want to keep people siloed so they can just cut departments wholesale without dealing with the mess of transferred roles. It’s a classic move to manage headcount numbers ahead of a quarterly earnings report. Don't waste your energy trying to jump ship within the company right now; start looking at your external options before the job market gets even more competitive. Your skills are worth more than being a line item in their restructuring plan.

I experienced the exact same thing last year. I had hiring managers ready to sign off, but HR blocked the transfer at the final stage with zero explanation. It feels like they hold you hostage because it’s easier to manage a headcount if everyone stays put. The 'silent freeze' is a well-known tactic here whenever leadership wants to trim the fat without triggering immediate panic. It is incredibly demoralizing, but you should take this as a massive red flag. If you are already looking for a way out, prioritize companies that actually value long-term talent development instead of playing these games with your career progression.
