Middle management getting quiet lately?

Is it just my region or have the weekly syncs become weirdly sterile? I’ve noticed a lot of vague talk about 'optimizing fleet utilization' and 'operational efficiency' lately, which usually feels like a precursor to a spreadsheet exercise. I’ve been with the company for five years, and the vibe shift in the last month is palpable. The group chat used to be active with jokes, but now everyone just sends emojis and stays silent. My area manager hasn't dropped by the branch in weeks, and even the usual gossip from corporate support seems to have dried up. Is anyone seeing headcount reductions in their local markets, or are they just squeezing us harder on labor hours for now? I’m trying to figure out if I need to update my resume this weekend or if I’m just being paranoid.

It sounds like the classic pre-layoff freeze. When leadership starts using buzzwords like 'optimizing fleet utilization' instead of talking about actual workflow, they’re usually just trying to decouple from the human side of the business before the cuts happen. The silence in your group chat is a bad sign; it means people are either scared to speak or already looking for the exit. My advice? Get your certifications updated and start checking the job boards now, because the 'spreadsheet exercise' is almost certainly already underway behind the scenes.
