Middle management paranoia

It’s getting exhausting. Every single meeting now starts with a slide deck about 'transformation' and 'cost discipline.' We’ve been asked to log every hour of our projects into a new tracking system, and it’s pretty obvious to everyone that this is just a way to figure out who to trim. If your name is on a project that doesn't tie directly to a high-margin brand, you’re basically a target. I spoke to a colleague in HR who was being intentionally vague, which is usually a red flag. Does anyone actually think the current strategy is going to turn this ship around, or are we just rearranging deck chairs while we wait for the inevitable severance packages? I’m tired of the corporate speak and the constant anxiety. If they are going to do it, I wish they’d just rip the band-aid off so we can all stop looking over our shoulders every time a calendar invite pops up from a director.

The transformation narrative is getting old fast. We’re all seeing the same patterns—the endless slide decks and the sudden obsession with granular time tracking are classic precursors to a layoff cycle. If you’re stuck on a legacy brand or a project that isn’t printing money, you’re definitely in the crosshairs. My advice is to stop waiting for HR to give you a straight answer. Update your resume, start reaching out to your network quietly, and focus on documenting your recent wins. If the ship starts sinking, you need to be ready to jump before the final round of cuts hits.

It is honestly pathetic how they try to dress up massive layoffs as 'cost discipline' and 'strategic transformation.' We have all seen this playbook before: create a new system to track everything, look for any excuse to flag headcount as 'non-essential,' and then act surprised when morale completely bottoms out. If you’re feeling targeted, trust your gut. You aren’t being paranoid; you’re just reading the room correctly. Take whatever data you can and secure your personal records now. At this point, the company culture is just a hollow shell, and nobody is actually safe.
