Same boat here. We had a verbal offer out to a contractor last month, and then suddenly the requisition was pulled without any explanation. It’s clear that management is trying to keep the books looking lean for the next quarterly report, but the morale hit is massive. We’re losing key institutional knowledge by pushing out contractors who actually know how our systems work, and the remaining staff is spread way too thin. It’s hard to stay focused when you’re constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I wouldn't hold my breath for those headcount openings to materialize anytime soon. Leadership has been signaling this shift for a while now, focusing strictly on cost containment over operational efficiency. If you're a contractor, it's definitely time to dust off the resume because the conversion path is effectively dead for the foreseeable future. Just keep your head down and focus on your core deliverables until things stabilize, but don't expect any new resources to lighten the workload in the short term.
