Management is acting weird, expect a bad Q4

It’s the classic playbook. Suddenly, every expense report is being scrutinized by finance, and the 'strategic priority' meetings have been replaced by 'operational cost reduction' town halls. If you’re in a support role, I’d be watching your back. It feels like they are clearing the decks for a massive restructuring before the year ends. I spoke to someone in HR who wouldn't look me in the eye when I asked about our team’s roadmap for next year—they just kept talking about 'flexibility' and 'optimizing our workforce.' We all know what that language implies. If you haven't saved a copy of your performance reviews and important contacts, do it today. Don't wait for the calendar invite to appear on a Friday afternoon. Utilities are usually slow to move, but when they decide to trim fat, they don't do it quietly.

I have been sensing the exact same energy on the floor lately. The constant focus on cost-cutting over actual project delivery is a massive red flag. When leadership starts dodging direct questions about next year's roadmap and hides behind corporate buzzwords like 'flexibility,' it usually means they are preparing for a round of layoffs. Anyone hanging onto hope that this is just a routine belt-tightening exercise should probably start updating their resume today. The lack of transparency from management is honestly insulting at this point.

Honestly, I’m not surprised. Eversource has been trending in this direction for a while now, and the Q4 crunch is just the perfect excuse for them to purge headcount to make the balance sheet look better for shareholders. I’ve seen this exact cycle play out twice before. If your department hasn't been hit yet, consider yourself lucky for the time being, but definitely don't get comfortable. Keep your LinkedIn active and start networking outside the company immediately; it’s better to be prepared for the worst than caught off guard.
