Rumors of potential cuts in R&D?

Heard some chatter through the grapevine about potential re-evaluations happening in some of the R&D divisions. Nothing concrete, and it's all very hush-hush, but the whispers are about budget reviews and potential shifts in strategic focus. Feels a bit unsettling, especially given the current market conditions. I know R&D is often seen as a long-term investment, but sometimes those budgets get squeezed first when things tighten up. Has anyone else heard anything similar, or have insights into what might be driving these conversations? Trying to get a sense of the landscape beyond my immediate team.

I've also caught wind of discussions around R&D spending. It's definitely a sensitive topic, especially with the industry's cyclical nature. My take is that while short-term budget adjustments are always a possibility, a company the size of ExxonMobil likely has long-term innovation goals that they'd be hesitant to completely abandon. Perhaps it's more about re-prioritizing existing projects rather than outright cuts. Time will tell, but it's understandable why people are concerned.
