Seeing reduced contractor headcount, what's the vibe?

Hey folks, been with ExxonMobil for a few years now, primarily in the upstream segment. Lately, I've noticed a definite slowdown in the onboarding of new contractors, and a few teams seem to be letting their current contract roles expire without renewal. It's not a company-wide announcement or anything, but there's a definite quietness around new projects that would typically bring in more external support. Just wanted to see if anyone else is picking up on this trend. Are you seeing similar things in your departments or other segments of the business? Could this be a precursor to something bigger, or is it just typical Q3/Q4 budget adjustments? Curious to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Yeah, I'm seeing it too. Things definitely feel tighter in the last quarter or so. There's a lot less chatter about new initiatives needing external help, and the usual buzz around contract extensions has quieted down. It's making folks a bit antsy, wondering if it's a temporary dip or something more significant. Hope it picks up soon.

From my end, it feels more like a strategic shift than a general cutback. Less emphasis on brand-new, large-scale projects and more focus on optimizing existing operations. This often means fewer contractors needed for exploratory work and more internal resources being redeployed. Still, the reduction in new roles is noticeable, and it's definitely a change from the past few years.
