Anyone else noticing the 'quiet' changes in headcount?

Maybe I’m paranoid, but the attrition lately hasn't been replaced. I’ve watched three people leave my department in the last two months—all high performers—and there hasn't been a peep about backfilling those roles. Instead, we’re being told to 'prioritize' and 'scope down.' That’s usually corporate-speak for 'we don't have the budget, and we aren't planning on getting it back.' I’ve heard rumors of a hiring freeze that isn't official yet. Has anyone seen job postings actually getting pulled or roles being silently deleted from the internal portal? If we aren't filling spots, it’s only a matter of time before they decide the current headcount is the new 'lean' baseline and look for a round of performance-based exits to trim the remaining fat. I’m starting to update my resume just in case, because I’d rather jump before I get pushed, but I’m curious if this is just my division or if the whole org is feeling this squeeze.

It is definitely happening across the board. I have been keeping an eye on our internal portal, and several listings that were active for weeks just vanished without a trace. Management keeps using the 'efficiency' buzzword during town halls, which is clearly a smokescreen for headcount reduction. If you see your team shrinking, do not expect those spots to open up again anytime soon. It feels like they are tightening the belt before the end of the fiscal year, and we are all just expected to absorb the extra workload without any additional support.

I honestly think you are reading the room correctly. We had two senior engineers depart recently, and their responsibilities were dumped onto the rest of us immediately with zero discussion about replacements. The narrative about 'prioritizing' is just a way to keep us working at full capacity while they quietly trim the headcount to hit margin targets. It is incredibly frustrating to see talent walk out the door while we are told to just do more with less. Keep your resume updated, because this trend usually only goes in one direction.
