Is the consolidation trend slowing down?

I’ve been at 5/3 for a few years now, and the atmosphere feels like it’s constantly shifting toward efficiency over everything else. After the recent news out of Michigan, everyone in my department is on edge. It feels like management is squeezing every bit of capacity out of us, and the 'do more with less' mantra is getting real old. Is there any actual visibility on if these cuts are localized or if there’s a broader roadmap for more downsizing this year? I’m starting to wonder if the long-term stability I signed up for here is just a relic of the past. Would appreciate any insight if anyone has an 'in' with leadership or hears chatter about the next quarter.

Honestly, I’ve been hearing the same sentiment across most of the mid-tier banks right now. It seems like 5/3 is playing the same efficiency game as everyone else to appease shareholders, especially with the current interest rate environment. The Michigan stuff is likely just the tip of the spear. Management loves to talk about 'synergies' and 'streamlining,' but in practice, it’s almost always code for permanent headcount reduction. If you’re feeling the squeeze, it’s probably a sign that the roadmap involves further consolidation through attrition and targeted cuts rather than actual growth. Better to keep your resume polished.

That atmosphere sounds incredibly draining. I left a similar role recently because the 'do more with less' mantra finally hit a breaking point where the workload became physically impossible to manage. If leadership isn't providing transparency, that’s usually your biggest red flag. Companies rarely pivot away from aggressive cost-cutting once they start a trend like this; they just get better at hiding the impact until it’s too late. Trust your gut—if you feel like the walls are closing in, don't wait for a formal announcement to start looking for a healthier environment elsewhere.
