Is the bench actually empty, or are we just hiding heads in the sand?

Seeing some suspicious activity lately. I logged onto the internal portal yesterday and noticed that several open positions I was tracking for internal transfers have been pulled down without notice. Not filled, just gone. When I asked my lead, I got the classic 'don't worry about it' line, which is basically corporate speak for 'don't ask questions you won't like the answers to.' I’ve seen this movie before in this industry. It usually starts with a hiring freeze, followed by a 'reorganization,' and then the inevitable LinkedIn posts from former colleagues. I genuinely like the work we’re doing on the current site, but the instability is getting to me. Has anyone heard anything about project cancellations or budget cuts affecting the E&C side? I’d rather know now if the writing is on the wall so I can start reaching out to my network before the market gets flooded with other Fluor engineers doing the exact same thing. It feels like the calm before a storm.

That tracks perfectly with what I’m seeing on my end. I’ve noticed the same pattern with project-specific roles vanishing overnight without any formal communication. When leadership starts pulling requisitions without backfilling, it’s rarely a sign of stability. The 'reorganization' talk is always the final warning flare before the real cuts hit. Honestly, if you’re seeing these red flags, it’s probably time to polish your resume and see what’s out there before the next wave of 'efficiency measures' makes the job market even tighter.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Sometimes these postings get pulled because of shifting contract timelines or budgetary reallocations that haven't trickled down to us yet. It’s definitely frustrating when you’re looking for a move and the goalposts keep shifting, but don't panic. Management is always going to be vague until things are finalized because they want to avoid a mass exodus while work is still ongoing. Keep your head down and focus on your billables for now; sometimes the corporate machine is just slow, not necessarily malicious.
