Layoff Report

If the worst happens, what's a realistic severance package look like?

Okay, I know there's no official word, but the whispers are getting louder, and frankly, I need to start planning for contingencies. I've been with Fortinet for almost 5 years, working as a software engineer on one of the core product lines. If layoffs do hit, what can people realistically expect in terms of severance? Is it usually a set number of weeks per year of service, or is it more variable? Any data points from past events (even if they were smaller scale) would be super helpful. Trying to get a handle on what my financial runway might look like if I'm suddenly out of a job. Just want to be prepared.

Hang in there! It's smart to plan ahead, even if nothing is confirmed. Based on past tech layoffs, a common structure is 2 weeks of pay per year of service, often with a minimum guarantee (like 8-12 weeks). They might also extend health benefits for a period and potentially offer outplacement services. Don't hesitate to ask HR directly about their standard policy, even if it's just a general guideline they're willing to share. Keep your resume updated and start networking now, just in case.

Honestly, I wouldn't put too much stock in rumors. Fortinet has been pretty solid. But if you're worried, the best you can hope for is likely a few weeks per year of service. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less, and it can depend on your level and how they decide to structure it. If they *do* do layoffs, they'll probably try to keep it somewhat standardized to avoid legal issues. Focus on your performance and your contributions; that's always the best defense.
