Performance Improvement Plans becoming more aggressive?

Is it just me, or is the bar for 'meeting expectations' moving significantly higher lately? I’ve noticed a spike in managers putting people on PIPs for things that were considered minor a year ago. It feels like they’re trying to trim the fat without doing a company-wide RIF so they don't have to deal with the PR hit. I’ve seen two people in my department get hit with performance flags out of nowhere after two years of solid reviews. It’s making the environment incredibly toxic—everyone is looking over their shoulder instead of focusing on the actual security work. I love the product, but the culture is shifting hard toward a 'hit your KPIs or get out' mentality, and the KPIs are becoming borderline impossible to reach with current staffing levels. Anyone else seeing this pattern in their org, or is my leadership just being particularly ruthless this cycle?

It's definitely not just you. The mood around here has shifted dramatically in the last few quarters. They seem to be tightening the screws to reach specific operational metrics without triggering the legal and public relations nightmare of an official layoff. When long-term employees with consistent track records start getting scrutinized over minor issues, it’s a clear signal that leadership is looking for any excuse to reduce headcount. The paranoia is real, and it’s turning what used to be a collaborative space into a cutthroat environment where everyone is just waiting for the next shoe to drop. Keep your resume updated.
