Unexplained access removals - paranoia or something more?

Noticed two people in my department had their system access revoked overnight with no explanation given. Usually, when someone leaves on their own terms, there’s an email about a 'new opportunity' or a farewell lunch, but this was just silent. No mention, no email, just a blank space on the org chart by the time I logged in this morning. I tried pinging them on Slack and the accounts are already deactivated. Are we seeing a slow-bleed layoff start, or is this just coincidence? The lack of transparency from the top is honestly the most frustrating part. We’re all sitting here keeping our heads down, but it’s impossible to focus on the current backlog when you’re worried about whether your badge will still scan on Monday. If anyone else is seeing weird personnel changes, post it here. I just want to know if I need to start locking down my personal files and clearing my browser history.

That’s classic Fortune Brands behavior. They’ve been trimming the fat behind the scenes for a few months now, and they rarely give anyone a heads-up. The corporate culture there has always relied on that sudden, cold silence to avoid potential friction or productivity dips during the transition. Don't expect an official email; they prefer to let the rumor mill do the work for them while they quietly restructure. It’s definitely not a coincidence, just the standard way they handle offboarding to keep the rest of the floor guessing.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. While it’s definitely unsettling, people disappear from system access for all sorts of reasons—internal investigations, policy violations, or even personal leave that HR isn't allowed to disclose. It’s easy to get paranoid when things feel quiet, but unless you start seeing the workload being dumped onto your team without explanation, it’s best to keep your head down. Sometimes a blank spot on the org chart is just a technical glitch or a quiet resignation that hasn't made its way through the bureaucratic pipeline yet.
