Anyone notice the sudden tightening on travel and contractor spend?

Is it just my department or is everyone seeing the clampdown on T&E and contractors? I’ve been here for a few years and usually, this time of year is business as usual, but leadership has been acting strange during recent all-hands. They keep dropping vague lines about 'operational efficiency' and 'realigning resources,' which usually translates to a spreadsheet exercise from HR. I’ve noticed a few long-term contract roles that were supposed to be renewed just… disappeared from the portal. It feels like they are prepping the balance sheet for something. Has anyone heard any scuttlebutt from the Olathe office? The lack of clarity is starting to get to me, and I’m tempted to start polishing the resume just in case. Don't want to get caught flat-footed if they decide to trim the fat before Q4.

It is definitely happening across the board. I have seen the same thing in my division with open requisitions being pulled and travel requests getting denied by finance that would have been auto-approved a year ago. It feels like they are tightening the belt ahead of the next quarterly earnings report. Whenever leadership starts using those buzzwords like 'operational efficiency,' you know the budget axe is swinging somewhere, and contractors are always the easiest targets to prune first to make the numbers look better.

Same boat here. Honestly, I think they are just playing it safe given the current market volatility. I have had to push back several site visits recently because the travel authorization process has turned into a total nightmare of red tape. It is frustrating, but given the macro environment, I am not surprised they are reining in spending. Just try to keep your head down and stay productive; usually, these cycles last a couple of months before things normalize again, so do not panic yet.
