Anyone hearing rumors about Q3 headcounts?

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately about tightening budgets and a slowdown in billable hours across my practice. Management keeps talking about 'optimizing efficiency' during the town halls, which usually sounds like a coded way of saying cuts are coming. Has anyone heard anything concrete from their MDs? I’ve noticed some of the usual travel approvals are getting tougher to clear, and recruitment seems to have stalled out completely for the open roles in my department. It feels like the air is getting a bit thin, and I'm honestly just trying to gauge if I should be polishing my resume this weekend or if I'm just being paranoid. Any insights from anyone closer to the leadership layer?

The talk about efficiency is definitely the standard script before a RIF. I’ve noticed the same trend with travel restrictions and hiring freezes—it is basically the corporate signal that the belt-tightening phase has begun. My MD is playing it close to the chest, but the sudden lack of communication on the open reqs in our sector is pretty telling. Don’t wait for an official announcement if you see your specific practice area slowing down; it is worth updating your profile now just in case they decide to trim the headcount before the quarter closes.

It is honestly just the typical cycle at this point. Whenever leadership starts using 'optimizing' in every meeting, you know the budget axe is being sharpened. I’ve been through this before, and the tightening of expense approvals is always the first domino to fall. If you aren't seeing movement on the backfill roles, that is your answer right there. They are keeping the overhead low to hit the targets. Just keep your head down, track your billables, and maybe start putting out some feelers elsewhere while things are still calm.
