Feeling the shift in billable utilization targets lately?

Is anyone else feeling the pressure on utilization metrics in the last few weeks? My practice lead keeps dropping hints about 'efficiency' and 'streamlining' during our town halls. I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter about how the firm is moving away from long-term project engagements toward these shorter, productized advisory sprints, but the transition feels messy. People are sitting on the bench way longer than usual, and the internal talk about 'right-sizing' is starting to sound like a precursor to something bigger. I’ve been tracking our project pipeline and it seems like everyone is scrambling to justify their headcount. We keep being told that we need to lean into the new internal tools to speed up our delivery, but the reality on the ground is that the clients aren't really buying what we're pushing right now. It feels like we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. Has anyone heard rumors about a formal freeze, or are we just seeing the usual quarterly performance management theater?

The shift toward productized advisory sprints is definitely real, and it’s creating a ton of friction. When you prioritize speed over depth, the bench time is inevitable because the sales pipeline can’t keep up with the churn. Management keeps throwing around buzzwords like 'efficiency' to mask the fact that the business model is struggling to adapt to these shorter engagements. It’s a classic squeeze play—they expect us to be billable 100% of the time on projects that haven't been fully scoped or sold yet. If you're sensing a bad vibe, trust your gut; the 'right-sizing' talk usually isn't just noise.
