Gartner Consulting - Are we getting enough billable hours these days?

Hey everyone, just wanted to put this out there and see if anyone else is feeling it. Lately, it feels like hitting utilization targets has become a real uphill battle. My projects seem to be winding down faster than usual, and the pipeline for new work isn't filling up as quickly as I'd expect for this time of year. I'm spending more time on internal initiatives and training than I'd like, which is fine, but it's not directly contributing to client value or my personal billables. It's making me wonder if there's a broader trend of clients pulling back or if our sales teams are facing headwinds. Just looking to gauge the general sentiment and see if this is a widespread issue or if I'm just in a particular pocket. Anyone else experiencing similar utilization challenges or seeing a dip in project velocity?

Yeah, I've noticed the same trend on my engagements. It feels like clients are being much more cautious with their budgets and project scopes, which naturally impacts our ability to bill. There's definitely more pressure to be highly efficient and justify every hour spent. It's a tough market out there, and keeping the utilization high requires a lot of proactive effort in both client management and internal pipeline building. Hope things pick up soon for everyone.

Completely agree. The project lifecycles seem shorter, and securing follow-on work or new projects has been a challenge. We're all doing our best to support internal initiatives and skill development, but the core of our value lies in client delivery. It's a constant balancing act to ensure we're meeting our targets while also delivering exceptional quality to our clients. Hopefully, the market shifts and more opportunities become available shortly.
