Gartner Consulting - Project delays and scope creep becoming a problem?

Starting to see a pattern where projects are getting pushed back or experiencing significant scope creep, but not in the usual ways. It feels like clients are either hesitant to commit to the original plan or are constantly shifting priorities mid-engagement. This is impacting utilization and making it hard to forecast resource needs accurately. Anyone else dealing with this? It's making project delivery much more challenging and frankly, quite frustrating when we can't get clear direction.

I've definitely observed a similar trend. It seems like the initial discovery phases aren't always capturing the full picture or evolving business needs. Clients might be nervous about upfront commitments, or perhaps the economic climate is forcing rapid pivots. This constant flux makes it incredibly tough to maintain momentum and deliver consistently. The lack of stable direction really does put a strain on the team and makes hitting those utilization targets a real headache. It's a tough environment to navigate right now.

You're not alone. The ambiguity in client direction and the tendency for priorities to shift mid-stream are becoming standard operating procedure. It feels like we're constantly trying to hit a moving target, which naturally leads to delays and expanded scopes. This makes resource planning a nightmare and frankly, it's demotivating when projects get bogged down by external indecision. We need clearer, more committed statements of work from the outset to manage expectations and ensure successful delivery.
