Leadership keeps talking about 'right-sizing' the practice

Is anyone else getting weird vibes during the weekly town halls? The partners keep harping on about 'operational efficiency' and 'realigning our resource base to current client demand.' I feel like I've heard this script before at my last firm right before the VPs started dropping like flies. My utilization is barely hitting the billable target, and I’m seeing fewer project codes being opened for mid-level consultants. Every time a message pops up from HR asking for a check-in, my stomach drops. Are they actually seeing a dip in demand, or is this just standard performance-management-through-fear to keep us grinding on internal initiatives that don't pay the bills? If anyone has heard anything about Q4 headcount targets in their specific practice, please chime in. It feels like we are all just sitting ducks waiting for a calendar invite titled 'Business Update.'

It’s classic corporate doublespeak. Whenever leadership starts throwing around terms like 'operational efficiency' or 'realigning resources,' it is almost always code for impending layoffs. Don't let them gaslight you into thinking it’s about 'current client demand' when they've been padding their own margins for years. If your utilization is slipping and the project pipeline feels stagnant, start polishing your resume now. It is better to have a lead on a new role before the dreaded calendar invite from HR shows up on your screen. Trust your gut—the vibes are usually right.
