Utilization anxiety is at an all-time high

I’ve been with the firm for a few years, but the atmosphere right now is the most tense I’ve ever seen it. The constant push to justify every billable hour is becoming suffocating. It feels like the firm is waiting for a reason to trim the fat, and they are using the current 'market recalibration' as a scapegoat. I’ve noticed a few people in my department have suddenly gone quiet, or their Slack status has been inactive for unusual chunks of the day, which usually points to a 'performance management' plan being in effect. I’m doing my best to keep my head down and secure a new project, but the lack of transparency from the top is making it impossible to gauge the actual stability of our team. If you’re a junior or mid-level consultant right now, are you guys actually seeing enough demand to sustain your utilization, or are you just sitting on the bench hoping for a bridge project? I’m starting to update my resume just in case.

The shift toward hyper-surveillance is honestly demoralizing. It wasn’t always like this, but the current obsession with utilization metrics has turned every day into a silent audit. When management starts leaning this hard on 'recalibration,' it’s clear they aren't looking at long-term value anymore, just headcount reduction. Seeing colleagues go dark on Slack is the classic tell—we all know exactly what those gaps in activity mean. It’s hard to stay motivated when you feel like you’re constantly one spreadsheet away from being on the chopping block.

I've been watching the same patterns. The pressure to justify every minute is creating a culture of fear, and it’s completely backfiring on actual productivity. Instead of delivering quality work, everyone is just playing the game to make their dashboard look green. It’s an open secret that the 'market conditions' narrative is just a way to prune the roster without owning the human cost. If you're feeling the anxiety, you aren't alone; the firm has made it clear that survival depends on optics rather than performance.
