My dept is suddenly "under review" for "efficiency"

So, my team has been told our function is undergoing an "efficiency review." We were given a presentation that was mostly buzzwords about "streamlining workflows" and "optimizing resource allocation." No one is explicitly saying layoffs, but the vibe is definitely tense. We've been asked to document every single task, every meeting, and every piece of software we use. It feels like they're trying to find reasons to cut costs, and our department, while important, isn't directly revenue-generating. I've been here for a while and haven't seen this level of scrutiny before. Has anyone else experienced this kind of "review" recently? What was the outcome? Trying to gauge how worried I should be.

That sounds incredibly stressful. The whole 'buzzword bingo' approach to efficiency reviews often feels more like a pretense for cuts than a genuine effort to improve things. Documenting every single task sounds like a massive undertaking and definitely raises a red flag about the underlying intentions. Hopefully, your team's value becomes clear through this process and they see the importance of your function, rather than just looking for numbers to trim.

Ugh, that's a classic. The 'efficiency review' is usually code for 'we need to make budget cuts and we're starting with you.' The detailed documentation request is particularly galling – it’s like they expect you to do their job for them. I've seen this happen before, and unfortunately, it often leads to exactly what people fear. Hang in there and try to keep your heads up. Document everything meticulously; you might need it.
