Is the synergy post-merger finally hitting a wall?

It feels like we’ve been 'integrating' for ages, but lately, the redundancy talks are starting to pop up in private channels again. Everyone I talk to in engineering seems to be working on these abstract 'value add' projects that lead nowhere, while our actual core product roadmap feels like it’s being starved of resources. I’ve heard rumors of certain middle management layers being evaluated for 'value,' which usually means they’re looking for people to cut to pad the margins. Does anyone know if there’s a target number for the end of the year? Every time I bring this up to my skip-level, they give me the same vague script about focusing on what we can control. If I have to hear the word 'synergy' one more time without a clear plan for product investment, I’m going to lose it. Just checking if anyone else is getting the same vibe, or if my department is just particularly toxic right now. Seems like the writing might be on the wall.

The 'synergy' phase is just code for systematic divestment at this point. I’ve seen this playbook before: they keep the lights on with skeleton crews while funneling everything into buybacks or high-level pivots that ignore technical debt. Those abstract projects are just busy work to justify headcount until the next quarterly call. If you’re seeing middle management jitters, start updating your resume. When the focus shifts from core product stability to abstract 'value,' it means they are prepping the balance sheet for another round of restructuring, and engineering is almost always the first sacrificial lamb.

Honestly, the integration was never about efficiency, it was about stripping assets and consolidating market share. It’s no surprise the roadmap is starving; the priority isn't innovation, it’s keeping the margins attractive for shareholders. I wouldn't hold my breath for any meaningful updates to the core tech stack. If you’re in a role where your output isn’t directly tied to a visible revenue line, you should assume your position is under review. The writing has been on the wall for months, and the private chatter about layoffs is just the precursor to the final sweep.
