Pipeline freezes and internal mobility

Trying to gauge if this is company-wide or just my department. We had two open headcount spots for senior devs that were supposedly signed off on months ago, but HR just pulled the plug on them last week. They claimed it was a 're-evaluation of resource allocation,' which is corporate speak for 'stop spending money.' Does anyone know if they are freezing hiring across the board, or are they just squeezing specific orgs? I’ve seen a few LinkedIn updates from folks who left recently, and those roles aren't being backfilled. It feels like a silent attrition strategy to get the numbers down without having to announce a formal layoff event. If anyone has intel on whether the hiring freeze is universal or just for non-critical teams, I’d appreciate the insight.

It is definitely company-wide, not just your department. I have seen the same pattern in my group over the last quarter. Every time we get close to filling a backfill or a new headcount, the requisition mysteriously disappears or gets put on an indefinite hold. They are prioritizing cost-cutting to balance the books, and internal mobility is basically a ghost town right now. Don't waste your energy trying to transfer; it is a dead end while they focus on margin protection rather than growth. Look outside if you need a move.

That 're-evaluation of resource allocation' line is the classic Gen Digital script. Trust me, it is happening everywhere, not just where you are sitting. I have colleagues in three different orgs reporting the exact same thing: open roles vanishing overnight and internal transfer requests being met with total silence from HR. They are definitely playing a numbers game to make the quarterly outlook look leaner for leadership. If you see people leaving, it is because they realized the writing is on the wall. Keep your options open elsewhere.
