I’ve been around long enough to recognize that 'leaner' is almost always corporate speak for upcoming layoffs. When leadership pivots from aggressive growth goals to cost-cutting mandates, the headcount is usually the first place they look to balance the books for shareholders. If you are already feeling that shift in the office culture and the VP is dropping those hints, your gut feeling is probably right. Start polishing your resume and saving a bit of cash now, just in case. It is better to be prepared and stay than to be caught off guard if the cuts finally hit.
Honestly, try not to lose too much sleep over it just yet. Every company goes through these cycles where middle management repeats the buzzwords of the day to look like they are in control of the budget. Sometimes 'leaner' just means they are cutting travel expenses, stopping the free snacks, or delaying a few hires, not necessarily gutting the staff. If your department is still shipping product and hitting key deliverables, you might be safer than you think. Keep your head down, do your job well, and wait for the quarterly earnings call to see what the actual strategy looks like.
