So the WARN notice for Baltimore is official—22 people gone as of mid-May. I know 22 doesn’t sound like a 'mass' layoff compared to the tech giants, but for those of us sitting in these offices, it feels like the floor is dropping out. I’ve been with GD for a few years, and I remember when we were told this sector was the ultimate hedge against recession. That narrative is aging like milk. It’s always the same story: 'restructuring' and 'aligning resources.' Meanwhile, management is still talking about record backlogs and quarterly growth. How does that math work? If we’re so essential, why are people being shown the door right before the summer? I’m starting to think no department is safe, even the ones tied to long-term government contracts. Everyone is looking over their shoulder during meetings now. Does anyone have any insight if this is just the beginning for the MD site, or is this the extent of it? I'm honestly just exhausted by the constant uncertainty. It’s hard to stay focused on deliverables when you’re wondering if your badge will still work on Monday.

I completely hear you. That 'hedge against recession' talk is just a corporate fairy tale they feed us to keep productivity high while they quietly shuffle the deck chairs. Twenty-two people might look like a rounding error on a spreadsheet to the executives in Arlington, but for those colleagues, it’s their entire livelihood. It’s draining to watch the company prioritize 'resource alignment' over the people who actually build the products. The transparency is non-existent, and honestly, the morale in my division has been in the gutter since the last round of 'strategic shifts' were announced. Stay safe out there.

Look, nobody likes to see their coworkers get the boot, but let’s be realistic about the industry. General Dynamics is a massive machine, and sometimes these smaller cuts are just pruning the dead weight to keep the margins healthy for shareholders. It feels cold because it is. If you're stressed about your position, focus on updating your clearances and brushing up your resume instead of looking for empathy from management. They’ve never cared about the individual, and they never will. It’s a business, not a family, and it’s time to stop expecting them to act like one.
