I feel your pain. It’s the classic corporate playbook: boost the share price by cutting the muscle that actually keeps the programs running. Every time they talk about synergy or efficiency, I know my workload is about to double while our headcount drops. It’s impossible to feel invested in the long-term mission when you’re constantly looking over your shoulder. I’ve started updating my resume every few months just to keep my sanity. At this point, the mission feels like an afterthought to the quarterly earnings report, and that’s a tough reality to swallow when you care about the work.
Hang in there, but don't hold your breath for things to change. This is the new reality at GD. They prioritize the dividend over the people, and the 'efficiency' rhetoric is just a convenient shield for their bottom line. Most of us have checked out mentally and are just doing the bare minimum to get by until the next inevitable shift. Focus on yourself and your own marketability outside these walls, because this place hasn't cared about retention or morale for a long time. It’s just business, even if it feels incredibly personal.
