Five people in CO doesn't sound like a company-wide bloodbath, but I've been around Halliburton long enough to know how this usually plays out. They start small to avoid triggering massive mandatory disclosure filings while testing the waters. If your manager is acting weird, trust your gut. Usually, the 'performance-based' excuse is the corporate cover-up for headcount reduction targets handed down from corporate to balance the books before the next quarter hits. Keep your resume polished and start quietly networking now.
You are definitely overthinking this one. Every single quarter, some low-level staff get cut for performance issues or local project adjustments. If it were a major layoff, you would be seeing notices across multiple states and departments. Halliburton is currently focused on maximizing efficiency, but unless you’re seeing widespread hiring freezes or actual office closures, this is likely just standard pruning. Don't stress out your manager over a few people leaving; just focus on your deliverables and stay out of the corporate noise.
