It’s definitely the new playbook. I’ve seen this exact tactic used at other large firms to trim the headcount without triggering mass layoff announcements. By making the office policy mandatory and tracking badge swipes, they create a paper trail for 'performance issues' or failure to follow company protocol. It’s a cynical way to force voluntary attrition or build a case for cause. Don’t wait around—start updating your resume now, because if management is watching the turnstiles this closely, the decision on who goes has likely already been made.
I don’t know if it’s a full-blown conspiracy or just poor management, but the obsession with badge data is definitely fostering a toxic environment. People are just sitting in the office doing Zoom calls all day anyway, so the 'collaboration' argument doesn't hold much water. If they are actually using this to target people for cuts, it’s a cowardly way to handle business. Just watch your back, keep your documentation in order, and don't give them any easy excuses to put a target on your back while they figure out their next move.
