Here we go again: WARN notice for Jan 1

Just saw the latest WARN filing hitting the wires for Huntington. 87 positions gone right at the start of the year. The locations listed are pretty random—Placerville, Atwater, San Andreas—which makes me think this is a cleanup of legacy footprint or maybe some back-office stuff that finally got the axe. Honestly, the timing is brutal. Who lays people off effectively on New Year’s Day? It feels like they are trying to bury the news while everyone is hungover and off work. I’ve been hearing whispers in my department about 'efficiency initiatives' for months, and now that we see the numbers, it feels like the tip of the iceberg. If you’re at one of these sites, check your email immediately. Does anyone know if they are offering any decent severance or are they just kicking people to the curb before the Q1 earnings call?

The timing here is beyond cynical. Dropping layoff notices while the rest of the world is ringing in the New Year shows exactly how little leadership values their staff. Those locations might seem random, but to the people losing their livelihoods during the holidays, it’s a disaster. It’s becoming a pattern with Huntington to hide these headcount reductions during holiday news cycles to minimize public blowback. If you are still there, update your resume now because this isn’t the first time they’ve done this, and it certainly won't be the last.

It is frustrating to see this hit the wire, though not entirely surprising given the state of the regional banking sector lately. Management is clearly trying to streamline operational costs by cutting legacy roles, but burying it under the New Year holiday is a coward’s move. Those 87 families are now dealing with an immediate crisis when they should be enjoying the break. Whether it's a consolidation of their footprint or just straight-up bottom-line cutting, the lack of transparency is the real problem. Expect more of this throughout the quarter as they squeeze every penny.
